A Feast Amid the Plague — How the 105th Anniversary Was Celebrated in the Komi Republic
The Initial Policy of Dividing the Komi People
Autonomous Republic of Komi-Zyryan, has a history spanning more than a century. The Komi Autonomous Oblast (the territories inhabited by ethnic Zyryans) was established after the revolution on August 22, 1921, and was subsequently transformed into a republic in 1936. Another part of the Komi people was placed under an unnamed administrative entity, characteristic of a policy aimed at dividing the Komi people and turning them into part of the melting pot of the “Russian person.” By creating artificial entities such as Perm Krai (the ancestral territories of the Komi-Permyaks) and Kirov Oblast, the “collectors of Russian lands” divided the ancestral lands of several peoples at once: the Komi, Udmurts, and Mari, not to mention the Chud lands of the Merya and Bjarmia.
Did such a policy of total assimilation into the “Russian ethnos” bring any benefit to non-Russian peoples?
The answer is obvious: if the death of a people means its salvation, then it is undoubtedly a victory for the defeated themselves… It seems that the “Russian Newspeak” was not invented only in the last couple of years*, but was the result of the long-term work of many generations of internationalists.
How the Komi Themselves Marked the 105th Anniversary of the Komi Republic
As activists write, the celebration itself got off to a poor start:
“Bur lun! Today is the Day of the Creation of the Komi Republic. The mobile internet was switched off in the morning, sirens are wailing. The wired internet is also working terribly. They have gone quiet for now. The main events were supposed to begin at 12:00 on Jubilee Square. Rather sad…”
The results of yet another round of “collecting Russian lands” have affected not only ordinary Russians but also hit many Komi people. The centuries-long policy of Russification has benefited neither the ultra-patriots themselves nor the indigenous Finno-Ugric peoples, whose elite considered “cooperation” with a neighbour such as Russia to be advantageous.
Today, the Komi are dissatisfied not only with being treated as cannon fodder, but also with their standard of living and corruption, which resembles Russia in the mid-1990s or the pro-Russian period in Ukraine:
“How much we resemble Ukraine, in the bad sense… The same corruption. Damn it, there is no place for the Komi people! And for Finno-Ugric identity.”
The celebration itself resembles either officials laundering funds or an attempt to distract attention from what is happening around them:
“The so-called festive events are pathetic. They brought in the Pyatnitsky Choir and Leonid Agutin for insane amounts of money. No doubt they were asked to give these fading figures a chance to make some money.
There is practically no Komi people left anymore. I spoke with one Komi mort, a Komi man. He understands everything, but his daughter does not know the Komi language. He himself took part in the so-called SVO AND IS GOING THERE AGAIN. I ask: is there nothing to do here, are your own problems not being solved?… I knew two Komi men with higher legal education who knew the whole system from the inside. They signed contracts, and now they are gone. This is a form of perverted suicide. Widows were left behind; one had a son who died of his wounds, while the other never had children. But Moscow and St. Petersburg, and the South, are left untouched.”
However, according to reports from local associates of Suur-Suomen Sotilaat in Ingria and Moscow, covert mobilization is nevertheless taking place, and in some places people are being taken directly from the streets.
Whether the Komi people will exist or not is for us alone to decide. And as long as we remain silent, we will continue to be used for their dirty deeds.
*Since the 2000s, expressions such as “negative growth,” “popping sound” and others began appearing in Russian political discourse. In 2019, Elena Mizulina, riding the wave of “Russian Newspeak,” stated that “law is the greatest form of unfreedom” and that “the more rights we have, the less free we are.”
