Кто такой герой?
Герой — это персонаж, который поражает храбростью, отвагой и выдающимися деяниями, на которые равняются остальные. И для каждого народа свойственны свои кумиры и связанные с ними легенды, продлевающие интерес к самому народу. Так нам известны Финно-угорские герои прошлого и времён Зимней войны, мифические и реальные герои. Например, для Карелии это Иван Роккачу, Василий Левонен и др, для Марийцев это Мамия-Бердей, Чумбылат и др., для Мокшан Пуреш и др., Эрзян это Пургаз и др., у Коми Кодым-Ош и др., у Эстонцев Лембиту и др., у Финнов Лалли, Маннергейм и др., но ничего не слышно о героях Меря.
Почему так?
Были ли герои у Мерян и есть ли они сегодня?
Можно сказать, что герои есть у тех народов, чья идентичность ещё сильна. Как только забывается собственный язык, культура и история, умирает и народ.
В связи с планомерной ассимиляцией Меря, Мещера и Мурома, как народ растворились в колонизаторах, но пропали ли сами Меря, Мещера и Мурома? Однозначный ответ нет, они живы!
Следы народа мы находим и в археологии средней полосы России и в упоминаниях в летописях и в памяти самих жителей, чьи родители донесли своим детям упоминание об их истинном прошлом и о том, кто они есть на самом деле.
Недавно Мерянское движение «Туйбан Кердо» опубликовало фото и описание о последнем Мерянском герое, который жил и воевал против оккупантов. К сожалению, герой погиб сражаясь в рядах Украины, но до нас дошло описание и сама борьба за Мерянскую независимость.

«Дима погиб под Бахмутом в 2023. Он сражался на стороне Украины за свободную мерянскую землю. Писал, что эта война не похожа на другие. Что, сидишь и целый день ждешь короткой перестрелки, но оно того стоит, потому что это война за справедливость.
Мы познакомились в мерянской группе Андрея Малышева. Дима был язычником и анархистом-практиком — проводил акции прямого действия в защиту мерянского леса еще 15 лет назад. Дерзко поджигал опорники ментов и не только.
В солнцеворот воинский рай Вальхалла находится ближе всего к Земле. И Диман снова рядом, а последние слова его статьи «Меря здесь и сейчас» 2014 звучат как завещание:
«В наши дни всё яснее обозначается тенденция возвращения людей к своим локальным корням. Каждый приходит к ним своей дорогой. Пресытившись всевозможных химер и, казалось бы, оторвавшись от родной почвы сильнее, чем когда-либо удавалось человечеству, очень многие теперь обращают свой взор вглубь истории родного края. Применительно к нашей Волго-Окской территории мерянская тема, безусловно, должна быть одной из ключевых. Смахивая пыль с нашего неотъемлемого наследия, мы вновь обретаем Родину, которую действительно стоит беречь и защищать от того, что её разрушает. Землю, на которой осмысленное бытие может составить наше подлинное счастье».

Пока живы герои, жив и народ и тому подтверждение последняя перепись населения в России (возможно последняя хоть как-то отражающая идентичности, населяющие РФ).
Согласно переписи населения 2021 года Мерян насчитывается 109 человек.
А значит борьба не закончена и мы в самом начале событий!

Who is a hero?
A hero is a figure who inspires with courage, bravery, and remarkable deeds that others look up to. Every people has its own heroes and the legends surrounding them, which help keep interest in that people alive. We know about Finno-Ugric heroes of the past and of the Winter War — both mythical and real. For example, for Karelia these include Ivan Rokkachu, Vasily Levonen, and others; for the Mari people — Mamyia-Berdei, Chumbulat, and others; for the Moksha — Puresh; for the Erzya — Purgaz; for the Komi — Kodõm-Osh; for the Estonians — Lembitu; for the Finns — Lalli, Mannerheim, and others. But we hear nothing about heroes of the Merya people.
Why is that?
Did the Merya have heroes — and do they still have them today?
It can be said that a people has heroes as long as their identity remains strong. Once a people’s language, culture, and history are forgotten, the people themselves begin to disappear.
Due to the systematic assimilation of the Merya, Meshchera, and Muroma peoples, they have seemingly dissolved into the colonizing population — but have the Merya, Meshchera, and Muroma truly vanished?
The clear answer is no — they are alive!
We find traces of them in the archaeology of central Russia, in chronicle records, and in the memory of local inhabitants, whose ancestors passed down knowledge about their true heritage and identity.
Recently, the Meryan movement «Tuiban Kerdo» published a photo and description of the last known Meryan hero, who lived and fought against occupiers. Sadly, he died fighting in the ranks of Ukraine. But his story, and his struggle for Meryan independence, have reached us.

“Dima died near Bakhmut in 2023. He fought on Ukraine’s side for free Meryan land. He wrote that this war was unlike any other. That you just sit and wait all day for a short firefight — but it’s worth it, because this is a war for justice.
We met in Andrei Malyshev’s Meryan group. Dima was a pagan and a practicing anarchist — he carried out direct action campaigns to protect the Meryan forests over 15 years ago. He boldly set fire to police outposts and more.
During the solstice, the warrior’s paradise — Valhalla — lies closest to Earth. And Dima is near once again. His final words from his 2014 article “Merya Here and Now” sound like a testament:
‘These days, the tendency for people to return to their local roots is becoming increasingly clear. Everyone comes to them in their own way. Having grown tired of countless chimeras, and seemingly torn from their native soil more than ever before in human history, many now turn their gaze deep into the history of their homeland. In the context of our Volga-Oka region, the Meryan theme must undoubtedly be one of the key ones. By brushing off the dust from our inalienable heritage, we regain a Homeland — one truly worth cherishing and defending against those forces that seek to destroy it. A land on which meaningful existence may form our true happiness.’

Final words
As long as heroes live, so does the people — and this is confirmed by the most recent census in Russia (possibly the last one to reflect identities still present in the Russian Federation).
According to the 2021 census, there are 109 people who identified as Meryan.
This means the struggle is not over — and we are only at the beginning of what’s to come.
